Hearth and Hand is the wildly anticipated Joanna & Chip Gaines expansion of their Magnolia brand to Target shelves. After it launched on November 5, 2017, it left many Magnolia lovers disappointed, leaving stores with little to no purchases. But why? Today’s list explains why this launch seemed to fall short for many dedicated fans.
The absolute number one reason for complaint that I have seen on message boards and Facebook posts is, it is bland. I have to agree, it is very simple and clean, and if that is your specific style you are probably one of the people who was very excited and dropped a pretty penny. However, many expected more from the extremely popular designer. Her show has often featured eye catching, antique and farmhouse style, to see her transition to a more modern simplistic farmhouse style took many of her fans by surprise.
- Holiday Centric Release
A number of complaints stemmed from the timing and focus of the release. The early holiday season release included A LOT of holiday items and less day-to-day décor pieces. Because Magnolia products are generally anything but affordable, many fans have been waiting for a large release of cost-friendly décor. Seeing mainly Christmas and Holiday décor as the primary focus of the displays led many to still search for the main farmhouse pieces that they can utilize all year long.
- High price, low quality
Let’s face it, Magnolia products are typically expensive. Most of the fans whose pocketbook can’t handle a $99 throw pillow purchase (See above example from Magnolia Home line carried at Pier 1) have been super excited for a Magnolia brand that was aimed at them! When the release of Hearth & Hand offered simple and often bland décor pieces, it had them making comparisons. Many said that they didn’t see much of a distinction between this Target brand and any other in the store, they were very obviously paying for the name. Some even said that they wouldn’t have even given it a second glance if Joanna Gaines’ name wasn’t plastered on it. That’s pretty harsh coming from the loyal Gaines fan base.
- High Expectations
If you have watched Fixer Upper or perused any other higher priced Magnolia Brands, the expectations were pretty high. Fans were expecting to see similar pieces for lower costs. Anticipation only grew with announcements that the show would be ending and all of the marketing based around the Hearth & Hand release, the launch was admittedly underwhelming. However, this may not be completely the fault of Hearth & Hand itself, remember this is still a Target release. This is a massive store and it was unlikely that many of the store were able to display and organize the products that would have held to the Joanna Gaines fan standard. One final thought, this was a hugely popular release, many flocked to stores on Sunday, as soon as they could. Meaning that anyone that wasn’t through the door bright and early may have missed many interesting products and witnessed a picked over display.
- Brass & Green Complaints
Now this one I don’t completely agree with, but I have seen it pop-up quite a few times so I thought that I would mention it. Many farmhouse style lovers were just over the green, black and brass. It was a holiday themed release so the inclusion the hunter green (which I personally love) had some non-green fans turned off. Also, brass can be very divisive, strange I know. But if you are a more traditional fan of silver and gold tones, brassy metals can turn you off completely.
